What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a method of healthcare the body uses to promote natural healing and improve function. This is done by
inserting needles or by using a micro current form of electrical stimulation at very precise acupuncture points on the body.
How does it work?
The classical Chinese explanation is that
channels of energy, called "Chi" in Chinese, run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface.
These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the organs and tissues.
An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up the flow of energy in one part of the body
and restricts the energy flow in other parts of the body.
The meridians can be influenced by treating
the acupuncture points with needles or micro current electric stimulation. The needleless method involves using two electric probes with a very mild sub-threshold current over the meridian
point on the skin. The acupuncture treatment unblocks the obstructions
at the dams, and re-establishes the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the
body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in
the circulation of their energy through the meridians.
The modern scientific explanation is that
by treating the acupuncture points the nervous system is stimulated to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and
brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals
and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.
What can Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension, stress,
and emotional conditions, but in addition acupuncture also treats:
Digestive/Urinary Disorders:
gastritis, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea, bedwetting
Respiratory Disorders: sinusitis,
sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections, allergies.
Neurological and Muscular Disorders:
headaches, facial tics, neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendonitis, low back pain, sciatica, pain
